Coordinate distance calculator

Estimate the shortest surface distance between two latitude/longitude points on a spherical Earth.

Method

d = 2R × asin(√a)

Uses the haversine formula and mean Earth radius R = 6,371.0088 km.

What the result means

The result is a geodesic approximation along a spherical surface, not driving, walking, shipping, or flight-route distance. It ignores terrain, roads, restricted airspace, currents, and routing decisions.

Coordinate and precision checks

  • Latitude must be between −90° and 90°; longitude between −180° and 180°.
  • Use negative longitude for west and negative latitude for south.
  • The spherical formula differs slightly from an ellipsoidal geodesic, especially when higher precision is required.
  • Rounded or uncertain coordinates limit the meaningful precision of the distance.

Test case

Point A (0°, 0°) to Point B (0°, 1°) should be approximately 111.2 km on the equator.
